Für die 1967 in Thessaloniki, Griechenland geborene Künstlerin Vassiliea Stylianidou ist künstlerisches Schaffen ein fortdauernder Prozess der Auseinandersetzung mit „öffentlicher“ und privater Geschichte, bzw. öffentlichen und privaten Räumen. Stylianidou, die bei Rebecca Horn in Berlin studierte und neben dem Meisterschülerpreis der UdK vielfach ausgezeichnet wurde (u.a. NaFöG und DAAD Stipendium mit Arbeitsaufenthalt in NYC, Stipendium des Künstlerhauses Plüschow; Goldrausch Projekt etc.), arbeitet als Fotografin, Video- und Installationskünstlerin und bedient sich auch verwandter künstlerischer Medien wie Text und Sound.

 

In Stylianidous zweiteiliger Installation „The Plotless Room – I lie to History“ werden die unterschiedlichen Phasen durchlebter realer und noch bevorstehender fiktiver Geschichte in einem atmosphärischen Ensemble aus bewegten Bildern, Textfragmenten und Musik dicht verwoben. Ein komplexes Panoptikum entsteht, dessen Bestandteile zugleich allgemeingültig und persönlich, zufällig und absichtsvoll wirken. In seinem Zentrum befindet sich ein riesiges Betonmodell jener in Neugriechenland omnipräsenter Hausskelette, die gleichzeitig Symptom einer fehlgeschlagenen Bauspekulation und missglückter Familienidyllen sind.

Auch Themen wie Familie, Macht und Sprache werden von Stylianidou berührt; sie schafft so ein assoziationsreiches Modell „utopischer Geschichtsumschreibung“, das uns zu dem Versuch auffordert, die eigene Gegenwart innerhalb unserer persönlichen Geschichte zu re-cyclen und zu re-konstruieren.

Greek artist Vassiliea Stylianidou, born in 1967 in Theassaloniki, looks at her art as an ongoing process of confronting and reflecting both personal and “official” history or sites. Stylianidou studied with Rebecca Horn at the UdK Berlin and graduated as an artist capable of many media such as photography, video, installation and even sound and text. Hence her most recent installation is also an example of the various visual and aural aspects of her work.

 

A large concrete skeleton of a model house – as they are found all over in Greece as the dreary remains of failed housing speculation and family idylls – is the centre if her installation. A multitude of projections, text and sound give fragmentary, seeming arbitrary glimpses of Styliandiou’s own past and present life, but also comment on official history, which to her is sometimes nothing but a construct – just as one’s own. Her installation thus is a reminder of the various utopias and dystopias in our lives and dreams..
